Alto Gállego

Located in the high Pyrenees, Alto Gállego is situated in the west of the province of Huesca, between the regions of Jacetania, Sobrarbe and Hoya de Huesca. It borders to the north with the French Béarn.

Alto Gállego is very well communicated and close to the big cities of northern Spain, such as Zaragoza, Huesca, Pamplona, Bilbao, Lleida or Barcelona. It has a border crossing to France by road, the Portalet pass.

In the Alto Gállego region there is part of the Protected Landscape of San Juan de la Peña and Monte Oroel and the Natural Park of the Sierra and Canyons of Guara, as well as the Natural Monument of the Pyrenean Glaciers, 3 Areas of Special Interest for Birds and 16 Sites of Community Interest, framed within the Natura 2000 Network.In the process of being declared protected areas are the areas of Monte de Santa Orosia and Pico y Turberas de Anayet.

In the north of Alto Gállego there are some of the highest mountains in the Pyrenees: the Balaitús peak (3,144m), the Gran Facha (3,005m), the Palas peak (2,974m),... In the south, beautiful pre-Pyrenean valleys surround the advance of the Gállego river through the region. Lakes, forests, valleys, meadows and multiple trails invite you to enjoy nature in its purest state.

The lakes of the summits, the pine, beech and oak forests, the valleys, meadows and a network of beautiful trails, which invite us to enjoy nature in its purest state.

The landscape is the ideal habitat for sheep, bearded vultures, stoats, marmots, amphibians, reptiles, fish, mushrooms, mushrooms and wild flowers that fill the valleys with color in springtime.

In the wildlife park of "Lacuniacha" (Piedrafita de Jaca) we expect more than 4 kilometers of route where we can observe more than 100 specimens of the 15 different species that live in Lacuniacha, and two typical ecosystems of the Pyrenees. In addition, it offers an excellent opportunity for bird watching since, due to its particular characteristics for the animal species that live here, it is one of the largest ornithological paradises of the Pyrenees, including necrophagous birds, being able to know them through the Hide located in the Muladar belonging to the Official Network of Muladares of Aragon.

The region is an ideal destination for the practice of winter sports, with the ski resorts of Formigal and Panticosa as protagonists. Thanks to its hundreds of skiable kilometers, one of the largest and most important surfaces of the Pyrenees, we can enjoy activities such as alpine skiing, cross-country skiing, ski touring, snowshoeing and snowmobiling.

The facilities of these ski slopes are not only limited to the period of snow, but we can also enjoy them during the summer, when the chairlifts are enabled to facilitate the ascent to the summits and the beautiful lakes. Alto Gállego offers aninfinite number of activities, leisure and sports, both during the summer and the winter. You can go hiking, via ferrata, climbing, cycling, mountain biking, mountain biking or horseback riding, alone or accompanied by specialized guides. You decide!

Stop along your journey to appreciate the local flora and fauna. Alto Gállego is an excellent place for bird watching, such as the griffon vulture, the golden eagle or the blackbird.

Alto Gállego is not only mountains; Alto Gállego is water. Enjoying its rivers and blue water reservoirs is an unforgettable experience. As water sports, we canhighlight canyoning, canoeing, kayaking, canoeing or fishing.

Do you want to take to the skies? In Hoz de Jaca, don't miss the unique experience of flying over the Búbal reservoir on the spectacular Tena Valley Tyrolean traverse, a 950-meter course for the most intrepid. You can also dare to paraglide, and enjoy a bird's eye view over the most populated valley of Aragon.

And you can't miss the spectacular Panticosa footbridge route, which will take you over the Caldarés river to one of the best viewpoints of the town and the surrounding mountains: the O Calvé viewpoint.

In Alto Gállego there are many Romanesque churches and hermitages in an excellent state of preservation and of great patrimonial and artistic value.

The Alto Gállego region preserves a popular and religious architecture of high heritage value, in a multitude of Mozarabic style churches that constitute the "Route of Serrablo".

In the municipality of Biescas the greatest concentration of this type of churches is preserved and some of the best examples are: San Martín de Oliván, Santa Eulalia de Orós Bajo, Santa Eulalia de Susín, San Juan de Busa and the hermitage of San Juan de Espierre.

In the beautiful villages of the region we will find typical stone houses, where the chimneys with "espantabrujas or capiscol", constitute an incomparable landscape.

Museums such as the Drawing Museum of Larrés Castle or the Museum of Popular Arts of Serrablo, house the current and traditional art respectively.

The Way of St. James in its passage through the Alto Gállego allows to know the Valley of Tena in depth since it crosses it from north to south: starting from Portalet or Peiralún, continuing through Sallent (Socotor hospital) and Lanuza, then going around the Escarrilla strait until reaching El Pueyo and, later, crossing the river where the waters of the Búbal reservoir are found today to continue to Polituara. Very close to Sabiñánigo, the road turns off towards Jaca.
